Bill McGibbon was the person responsible for starting Step It Up. I just attended his latest book signing and was lucky enough to have dinner with him afterwards (with a group of 30). He was the author of The End of Nature twenty years ago and has a new book out now called Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future. He is also one of the founders of BALLE – Business Alliance for Local Living Economies. Its like a Chamber of Commerce for local businesses that work to keep their money in their community. We took him out to dinner to try to get a chapter started here in Los Angeles. There are 47 chapters nationwide and we already have a strong foundation here with our Green Business Network group. It’s a concept that is catching on very quickly around the country.

An idea I had for Step it Up in my community was to get a group meeting at Venice Beach to use a GPS to find out where the 20 foot elevation is along the beach front communities. Then have our group stand along this line running north – south and hold hands to show residents where the water line will be if we don’t start making changes to our habits.

Have a great Earth Day everyone.
